Arizona CDA Reflections

August 2010 Newsletter

It has been a month since I returned from the National convention
in Buffalo alone with 17 of your CDofA sisters. We spent four very full,
busy days and returned fueled and pumped up for a successful and
productive year ahead. With a newly elected National Board I ask that
you keep them in your court’s prayers that the Holy Spirit guides their
work and decisions on behalf of all of us and the good of our order.

I am very proud to extend special congratulations to our own
Delma Araiza who was elected a National Director. It was
an exciting day for Arizona. Kudos Delma!

Congratulations to the newly elected officers throughout Arizona.
I applaud and thank you for stepping up and saying “yes” to
serving your court and the CDofA. I pray that you have a good year
as you continue to serve those in need.

I hope everyone has had a safe and enjoyable (cool if possible!) summer so far. As many members begin to return to the valley  I hope all are refreshed and ready to go as we all work together to continue to make the Arizona Catholic Daughters  the best.  Please be sure to keep me up to date on your court’s activities.  When able I will look forward to visiting and sharing time with your courts.

We have some important dates coming up so please put them on your court calendar. I hope to see many of you on Oct. 10 at Rosary Sunday and Nov.20 in Marana to share in the dedication of our Habitat House. We are planning a special day and more information will be coming as soon as all details are finalized.

Your State Board is busy planning workshops for Oct 16 in Tempe and Oct. 23 in Marana.  All are welcome for a day of fellowship but I especially want to see all the court officers and DD attending either Oct 16 or 23. Cost is $10 including lunch. More information will be coming soon.

And in the long range, the board is already working on details for our State convention in Prescott Valley May 13, 14 and 15, 2011.

As you have probably noticed, we have a new editor for our State newsletter, Charlotte Williams. I would like to Thank Charlotte for accepting this position. Charlotte does such a beautiful job with our web page so I know she will shine with our newsletter. Any information you have for publication in the newsletter should be sent to me at: azstateregent@gmail.com for approval and copies to Charlotte at: charlotte@azstatecatholicdaughters.com

I want to extend a BIG Thank you to Delma Araiza for the super job she did for so many years as editor of the newsletter with 6 National 1st place awards to her credit.

I pray we all remain wrapped in Our Blessed Mother’s mantel as we follow her example as she leads us to her Son through our Unity and Charity as Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

God bless you,
Susan Moné, Az. State Regent

My Dear Catholic Daughters,

I hope and pray that all is going well and that the summer is great, relaxing and peaceful.

Inspiring and many other words may be said to describe the 2010 Biannual CDA National Convention in Buffalo, New York.  The convention was inspiring because I left with many ideas to promote the Order for others to know the Catholic Daughters.  I was inspired with the number of women at the convention who worked hard and played hard.  Through the many bylaws that needed to be discussed and approved to the banquets, and Masses that were celebrated, the women and clergy gathered to be Catholic Daughters

“for in Him, we live and move and have our being.” Acts 17:28

The theme of the convention truly put all that we do as Catholic Daughters into perspective for us.  We bring that perspective home to all of the courts here in Arizona.  We must continue to focus on Our Lord Jesus Christ in whom we live and move and have our being and His will for us and the order in Arizona.  The call is for all of us to continue to promote who we are in all that we say and do.  Through our work in our local courts to the work we do on the state level, we must remember why we are Catholic Daughters and put it into practice.  We must not hide our talents and treasures.  Let us come together to work for the Lord and bear much good fruit for Him.  Invite others to join the Order so that they too may share their talents and treasures for the Lord.  Think of new ideas to support the Church and the community.

I look forward to the State workshop to share with you more of what the convention gave to me.  See you soon!

May God Bless you, your ministry and your families.
In Him,
Fr. Abrán
Past National Regent, Libby Rameriz:  CONGRATULATIONS to all the newly elected Court Officers. The National Board is most grateful for you answering the call to accept this leadership role, and we wish you the very best. We also wish to extend our deepest appreciation to the retiring officers and urge you to continue to be actively involved in your court for your knowledge is very valuable.

NATIONAL CDA SUNDAY TO BE OBSERVED:  Catholic Daughters of the Americas National CDA Day will be observed on Sunday, October 17, 2010. The theme for this year is “For in Him, we live and move and have our being,” as we continue to pray for vocations.
Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe
WILL BE AT ROSARY SUNDAY AND AT OUR OCTOBER 16 CDA WORKSHOP

The Missionary Image is a photographic replica of the tilma of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico. The goal of the Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is to end abortion and melt hearts. Traveling since 1991, it has been in all the states of the Union, to South America, Russia, China, and to many other countries.

When the Missionary Image is in town, it visits churches, schools, etc. Melva Villa and Charlotte Williams travel with the Image and give talks about:
the story of Juan Diego (for the smaller children).
the symbols in her eyes and dress.
the Image itself and experiences we have witnessed.

After our talks, people may individually touch and venerate the image. Our Lady gives us many, blessings…yes, some will feel the heart beat. All will feel peace.

We have a new website just for Our Lady’s visits to the Phoenix area. It will be posted to all year. It talks about the following:
It will have information about Rosary Sunday Processions with pictures.
It will have comments made by people or children whom our Lady has blessed or
stories about Our Lady when she was here.
It will have links to many other good Our Lady of Guadalupe sites, including
Dr. Jose Aste Tonsmann and his study on the eyes of the Image.
Just type: guadalupeimagephoenix and hit enter. The complete url is:
http://www.guadalupeimagephoenix.com/index.html

As soon as there is an addition or change in the schedule for Our Lady’s visit; it will be posted immediately here:
Our Lady appeared in America in 1531—before there were any boundaries—Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of all who live in the Americas! In 1999, Pope John Paul II entrusted the future of the American Continent to Our Lady of G uadalupe. We need to pray to her!

Greeting From Our National Director
          Duchess Collins

My   Dear Catholic Daughters of Arizona

I take this opportunity to say "Thank You" to every
member for your dedication, continued support and
encouragement shown to me and to all the officers
of the Arizona State Court during the past four year
s as your National Director.

Through your continuous efforts and dedication towards
the goals of our Order, our success is due to the strong
principles we have for one another and for the Catholic
Daughters.

It has been an honor serving with each of you, and a very special thanks to all our wonderful husbands. Without their support our accomplishments would be few.

As Catholic Daughters, we must continue to strive for excellence. Our visibility confirms our support to our priests, church and principles of our Order. We must continue to pray for vocations, the right to life and peace around the world.

Keep a positive attitude and follow God's command to "Love One Another". Jn.15;17

Peace. Love and Joy be with you and your families

Maureen O’Reilly/O’Shea
First Vice Regent

It was such a pleasure to meet so many Az Catholic Daughters at the State
Convention last year.  Thank you so much for your encouragement and prayers.

Never in my life did I ever imagine that I would retire to beautiful Arizona.
I am sure many of you can also echo that thought. I was born in England
in September 1939.  My mother blamed me for starting WW Two.  I grew up
in Birmingham, England, graduating from High School in December 1954.
I worked for the Birmingham City Council for eight years and then moved to Independence, Missouri, USA in 1962.  From 1963 until 1990 I worked in the insurance business in Kansas City, Missouri.  From 1992 to 1994 I enjoyed being a tour guide at the Steam Boat Arabia Museum in Downtown Kansas City, Missouri.

My daughter Laura was born in 1972, and she is now married and lives in Brooklyn, New York, with her husband Todd and two children, Wyeth 31/2 and Owen just one week old.

My husband John O’Reilly and I started wintering in Green Valley in 1997.  After his death and a short time in England caring for my Dad, I decided that Green Valley would be home for me.

At the time Betty Grogan came into my life and encouraged me to join Catholic Daughters.  I did in 2004 and shortly after became Regent for Court Queen of Peace.  I served in that capacity for 4 years.  In 2005 you elected me to the office of State Treasurer.  During that time I was able to learn much more about our Order under the guidance of Past State Regent, Delma Araiza, whom I am proud to call a close friend.

Bill O’Shea and I were married at our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in Green Valley, Arizona, on May 6, 2006.

I am looking forward to working with Susan and the other Board Members.  We will be looking for your ideas and help during our term in Office.

May God Bless you all and bring good health to you and your families.
Marilyn Witte
State Treasurer

I was born in Illinois in 1935. We moved to Missouri when I was 7 years old. I attended
Catholic grade school then went on to finish high school. I was married in October 1954
to the boy next door.

I was active with the sodality of the church in DeSoto, Missouri. I held the office of
President.

We moved to Tucson in 1959. We raised 5 children—two boys and three girls. From
them, I have 20 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. My husband passed away
in 1994.

I have been active with the Altar and rosary society at St. Joseph. I held the office of President in the 80's and am now again the president.

I became a Catholic Daughter in 1972. I held the office of Vice Regent and Regent. I have been on the Arizona State board of for six years, four years as secretary and two as treasurer.
Habitat for Humanity

Our Big Day is just around the corner! The house is coming along on schedule thanks to many hard working hands.

Mark your court’s calendar for
November 20, 2010
at 11 AM

And start planning with your members for a trip to Marana, Az. More information will be sent to all Regents as to the events of the day.

Between now and Nov 20 we are still in need of volunteers to work on the house.

There are jobs of all levels.
No experience is necessary.
Come join the fun.
Volunteer coordinator is Marana Regent, Theresa Ramirez, Phone: 619-808-3085

This Habitat House has been a long time coming for the Arizona Catholic Daughters and it would be great to have as many CDA members as possible to share this special day with the Pottinger family and take pride in this wonderful accomplishment for Arizona.
Rosary Sunday has become a tradition in the Diocese of Phoenix as well throughout the State of Arizona.  Many individuals, groups and organizations participate in this celebration which draws over 5,000 people to pray the Holy Rosary in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.  Local Catholic of Daughters of the Americas Courts as well the Arizona State Court have been instrumental in establishing this tradition.

Once again your assistance is needed in four ways to assure the success of Rosary Sunday:

1.Pray for the success of Rosary Sunday.  An event of this magnitude needs a lot of prayer.  October is
the month of the Holy Rosary and is most fitting that our community comes together to honor Our
Lady.  At gatherings seek the prayer support of others.  Voice a communal petition.

2.Take an ad in program book. If your court has not taken an ad, it is not too late.  Also, by making a
donation of $25 or more you can be listed as a sponsor in the program book.  E-mail Dorothy Westfall
          for additional info.

3.Promote Rosary Sunday wherever you may be.  Extend a personal invitation to those whom you
          encounter.

4.Plan to have your court represented in the blessing procession. Call Charlotte at 602-264-0399 for
         details.

We are deeply grateful for your continued support of this magnificent celebration.

                                                                             Dorothy Westfall, Rosary Sunday Committee
Court St. Rose of Lima, #2398 in Safford

Thank you, Carolyn Vessels for sending us a picture
of members of Court St. Rose of Lima in Safford having
lunch with Fr. Thomas Dekka in honor of Priest

something to remember us by. Our court presented
him with a beautiful Mass kit before he left.

Court Blessed Mother Teresa # 2632 Marana.

Since the institution of this new court In January, the ladies have been very busy. They held their first fundraiser just three weeks after the institution mass. The court holds a breakfast one Sunday a month and half the proceeds go to their pastor, our own State Chaplain, Fr Abran. Many of the members of this new court have been on the job during the hot summer months, working on our Habitat for Humanity house. In July, three of the members attended the National Convention in Buffalo and came home very impressed and enthusiast about CDA

Court St. Augustine, #1227, Tucson                               July 25, 2010

I have not yet met with my board to set-up our agenda for 2010-2011. This I will do before our first meeting, September 7.

We did, however, on July 20, 2010 present a check in the amount of $3,000 to Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas, to be used for vocations. This money was derived from our fund raisers which were: Fashion Show in November, Craft and Cake Sale and Nacimiento (A traditional Nativity scene) Tour in December, Family Bingo in February, and a Rummage Sale in March.

Most likely we will have the same fund raisers this coming year. I will keep you posted.
Next time I’ll email you, still working on mastering the computer!

Love and prayers,
Alice Cavaletto, Regent, Ct 1227

NEW ASSOCIATE GROUP, LIFE CONNECTIONS, WANTS TO SAVE BABIES IN ARIZONA

Washington, DC (10 August 2010) – The newest American Life League Associate group, Life Connections Pregnancy Resource and Referral Center in Prescott, Arizona, exists with three goals in mind, according to Director Diane Duncan, (an active member of Court St. Germaine, 2473 0f Prescott Valley): Close Planned Parenthood’s doors in Prescott, speak the truth in love and save babies.

These are goals we wholeheartedly approve, support and encourage,” said Judie Brown, president of American Life League. “We extend a big welcome to Life Connections, and we look forward to working with them so that each new human being, created by God, is loved, nurtured and protected.”

Life Connections serves as a life-affirming alternative for teens and young adults targeted for abortion by Planned Parenthood. The organization reaches out through sidewalk counseling, prayer ministry, Rachel’s Vineyard post-abortion healing retreats and Silent No More Awareness campaigns. They plan on offering free pregnancy testing, educational materials, counseling, and classes on natural family planning and chastity.

American Life League’s Associate Program is a network of pro-life groups dedicated to the recognition of every human being as a person from his or her biological beginning. As a member of the Associate Program, Life Connections joins over 100 other organizations in over 40 states, Canada, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and the Philippines.

American Life League was cofounded in 1979 by Judie Brown. It is the largest grassroots Catholic pro-life organization in the United States and is committed to the protection of all innocent human beings from the moment of creation to natural death.
