Ct. Padre Kino, #1932, Tempe

The Devotion to Our Blessed Mother Mary during the May meeting
will close our business year. Our fund raising casino trips have been
a great success with the last trip this spring on May 20. We are
excitedly planning our Priest Appreciation Dinner for June 1
again at our favorite Italian Restaurante, Tutti Santi in Mesa.
Since we don't meet in July and August we should have lots of
summer vacation memories to talk about at the September meeting.

In April we brought candy for the Easter baskets shared with the
Desert Vista Behavioral Health Center and delivered by Vice-Regent
Elisabeth Wilcox and her crew.  We extended a warm welcome to
new members Mary Helen Nava, Alice Rosales, Marge Sabezak and transfer member Pat Krowe.

Regent Ramona Kiesecker shared all the information passed along about the upcoming state convention being held in Prescott. We elected our delegates with enthusiasm and encouraged anyone else who might be able to attend.

Court Padre Kino's spring continues to find members busy as little beavers. As always our activity for March was the Project Handsclasp Friendship bags that JoAnn Kersbergen and her crew put together.

January saw us beginning a new calendar year requesting yearly dues. The January casino trip had 35 participants who enjoyed a comfortable ride in a new type bus and just the right amount of gambling time for both a great fundraiser and personal fun time.

Activities continued for Court Padre Kino #1932. In December our Christmas Party brought several spouses of our busy members and some members who are unable to attend each month to a potluck dinner at McCreedy Hall at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Tempe on December 8. In addition to all the fabulous foods provided by our member chefs, we collected gifts for the clients of Desert Vista Behavioral Center to be delivered by Elisabeth Wilcox and her crew.

Court Santa Cruz, #1341, Nogales

Catholic Daughters, Court Santa Cruz, Bookstore continues to feed
the knowledge of Parishioners of Sacred Heart Parish in Nogales,
through books, audio. and video in both English and
Spanish. Bea Gordon and Letty Munozcano spearhead
this apostolate now as they did in the beginning. They feature a variety of subjects from Bibles, Popes Benedict XVI and John Paul II, and saints to Parenting and cookbooks, and even children’s items.

December 7, 2011 marks the 70th Anniversary of our court Santa Cruz #1341. We are gearing up for a celebration that includes two of the founding members, not to mention the ladies that are still very active in our court after 40, 50, even 60 years. Our celebration date still to be determined since it coincides with the procession of our Lady of Guadalupe. More information to follow.
I hope everyone had a wonderful time at the convention.    Marisela

Court St. Rose of Lima, #2398, Safford

Our court helps each year during the church’s annual Cinco de Mayo Fiesta.
We baked cakes for the cake walk, cooked food and sold nachos.   They are
(below from left) Amelia Sainz, Elva Lytle, Helen Romero, Vera Rodriguez,
Ida Sainz and Patsy Urrea. On the right below, is a picture of Cody Villabila. Cody
worked in the boutique booth.

We presented two scholarship winners. Cecilia Alvarado,
on the left below, is the Scholarship Chairman. Next to
her is the continuing college student, Jacqueline Villalba,
who is majoring in Art at Eastern Arizona College.
The other young lady is Samantha Jevas, graduating from Thatcher High School and going on to the University of Arizona, majoring in Veterinary Medicine. Last is Carolyn Vessels, Regent of Court St. Rose of Lima in Safford. We are so proud of these young ladies. They have been very active in the church and in the community. Besides the $1,000 scholarship each will be receiving from our Court, we also gave each a CDA rosary along with our encouragement to become Catholic Daughters.

Ct. St. Rose of Lima, Safford, sells artificial
flowers every Mothers Day after the
Masses. Each flower has a religious
medal tied on with a colorful ribbon.
Pictured, from left, are two longtime
Catholic Daughters, Teri Theissen
and Celia Knowlton, getting ready
to sell the flowers.

Recently, our local St. Vincent
de Paul moved from its cramped
quarters at St. Rose into a building that was formerly a Lutheran church. Some of our Catholic Daughters are volunteers there, and St. Vincent is one of our annual charities. Thus, our Court, along with other supporters, was invited to a breakfast on Grand Opening
Day Friday, April 15. Here is a picture of those who were at the breakfast.

St. Rose of Lima Court Secretary Helen Romero, was one of our models
for the March 5 Second Annual Fashion Show and Luncheon. It was a
great success, with about 200 people in attendance, including National
Director Delma Araiza and State Treasurer Marilyn Witte. Evie was
co-chair for this year’s event, along with past Regent Margarita
Wulftange. Our local newspaper used this picture, along with
the one of Evie Stoxen calling a winning raffle ticket for a full-page article .  http://www.eacourier.com/articles/2011/03/09/lifestyle/doc4d770d684fb30583095323.txt  “Eastern Arizona Courier.”

On December 12, 2010, St. Gianna Beretta Molla Court No. 2634 together
with the Knights of Columbus at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament
Church in Miami, Arizona, raised $3,215.00 by way of a 50/50 raffle

huge success and ended with the  1st Annual Cookiefest sponsored
by Court No. 2634.  Working with the  Christmas holiday theme,
cookies of all sorts graced five large tables in the church hall.
The Cookiefest will be back next year raising money for needs of the parish.

Court of Saint Francis of Assisi #2221, Tucson

Meeting the first Monday of the month with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. In the
activity room of the parish center, May 20, 2011.

The State convention in Prescott was very interesting. Beautiful hotel.
The delegates for our court were Trudi Cisco, regent and Rosie Puig,
vice regent. Alternates were Gerry Lombardi, Barbara Murray and
Paula Wiftke.

There were 18 girls from the junior CDA Court in Marana. They
participated in the flag ceremonies and presented each member with
a crocheted wash cloth that they are learning to do.

We need to congratulate Betty Nitka. She got a first place blue ribbon for our scrapbook. It was said hers was a true scrapbook not a photo album.

Our vice regent, Rosie Puig, got elected to the nominating committee for 2013. so if any of you would like to run for a state office, start thinking about that. A 55 year pin went to Felicia Ruiz.

Please pray for our members who are feeling blue these days. Grace Boland, Betsy Boyer,Becki Castillo, fractured wrist, Trudi Cisco, still a little weak from heart surgery, Naomi Figueroa, Jill Guzman, heart surgery, Viola Gurden, Phyllis Hall, Marie Kabat, Betty Nitka, fractured shoulder, Ann Sulima and all the rest of our members and all Catholic Daughters who need our prayers

SUMMER DAYS

How beautiful are Summer Days on city streets or country ways, with golden
sun and skies of blue—a bit of magic shining through,
so glorious—so wondrous fair with miracles just everywhere.
Each Summer Day is so alive with bees now buzzing in their hive, the butterflies and birds
on wing and nature's lovely happening, perhaps a shower cool and sweet.
Dearest season of them all just after Spring—before the Fall,
so much of beauty does she lend, a wonderful and treasured friend,
enchantment—freedom—sun's soft rays ever blessing Summer days.

Court St. Germaine, #2473, Prescott Valley

I will try and sum up a little of what our court has done. Since last May. On
the first Tuesday of each month we prepare Sub-sandwiches, bring chips,
home-made cookies (prepared by Micki Ritter) and drinks for the volunteers
workers for Habitat for Humanity. Usually Carolyn
Larson and I (Jeri Tweet) (occasionally Rosanna Matthews)
bring the lunch out to the workers. They really appreciate
our efforts and look forward to us every month.

The past few months we have been working hard on the 2011 State Convention.
Several of our ladies contributed a lot of their time on the different projects we
had to do. Kathy McLaughlin was in charge of the committee that involved
almost all of the ladies to go to local businesses and get them to donate our door prizes that we gave out at the convention. Cindy Ksenzulak was in charge of designing our hospitality bags and Alma Mellinger and Jeri Tweet helped sew and make the logo for the bags.

We also had help from Grace Medina, Lorri Segneri, Carolyn Larson, Jeri Tweet and Rosanna Matthews make the favors and Kathy McLaughlin, Carol Strict, Carolyn Koenig, Karen Izydorczyk, Jeri Tweet and Carolyn Larson fill the bags.

Carol Strict, Carolyn Koenig, Yvonne LaValley and Pauline LaValley helped with registration.

We made $400 on our 50/50 drawing and gave away 2 $100 prizes. We also made $400 ($300) on the (Sunday Convention Mass) and we gave all $300 to our RE program.at St. Germaine.

On Saturday, February 19, 2011, we had our Bunco event. We had 13 tables and 52 people came and enjoyed an evening of Bunco Sub-Sandwiches, salad, chips and deserts. We made around we gave out 6 money prizes and made a total of $283.00.

I hope this helps. I have been a Catholic Daughter this past 3 years at St. Germaine's and really enjoy what the ladies do for this community.

Thank you,
Jeri Tweet and Carol Larson

Armida Goeden.  In the fall we will initiate another five members.

Attending the AZ State CDA Convention as delegates were Vice Regent
Elaine Wiebe and Recording Secretary Bette Acitelli. Joyce Hubacek was our
alternate delegate.  Frances Garcia and Marta Vielma also attended. They had
a wonderful time and made many new friends.

Congratulations to our own dear Maureen O’Reilly-O’Shea upon her election
to 1st State Vice Regent and to all the other recently elected State Officers. We wish them well in their future endeavors.

Our Court was delighted to be the recipient of a first place ribbon in our category of the State Newsletter Contest!

Most of our Court members have departed to other destinations for the summer but we will try to stay connected by e-mail and “cheer” notes.
May the Lord bless you, Bette Acitelli

Court Our Lady of Lourdes, 2278, Sun City West

Our Lady of Lourdes Court 2278 celebrated Priest Appreciation day on
Sunday, May 22. CDA members, all dressed in white, attended Mass which
was celebrated by our court chaplain, Fr. David Ostler and concelebrated with
Fr. Michael Minogue and Fr. Julian Reginato.  Mass was followed by brunch
in Madonna Hall.  Nearly 80 CDA members, spouses, priests & a deacon were
served.

Court Our Lady of Guadalupe, 2250, Phoenix

In November we were busy with the annual prison crochet sales for the
André House. We also support the André House by physically sorting clothes.

We were honored to have The Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe
present at our Christmas luncheon held at JB’s. I was in complete awe when
I saw how strangers were drawn to her and how emotional they became.
We also raffled a beautiful tapestry of a Christmas angel.

During the Spring months, we visited the following churches
1.Mater Misericordiae Mission. While here, we enjoyed a Latin Mass.
This church is only blocks from where our laws are made at the State
   capital
2.Vietnamese Martyrs Parish. While there, we learned about Our Lady of La Vang. Fr. John
Nguyen gave us an excellent explanation of the Vietnamese symbols that were inside and
  outside of the church.

May was a very busy month for our court.
Some were invited to attend the Consecration
of the new Monastery of Our Lady of Solitude,
(Mother Angelica’s Sisters of Perpetual
Adoration) and they were seen later that
evening on EWTN. Others attended
our May meeting at St. Stephen’s Byzantine
Church followed by our support of their
annual Mother’s Day  Luncheon to benefit their scholarship
fund. We also worked and supported the Annual
Radio Family Rosary Card Party.

We worked with St. John Bosco Elementary School. We had over 500 entries in the art competition alone. Two of our students won the 1st Place in Arizona State Competition. On the right is artwork of one of the winners—the theme was—“The Lord is my Light.”

We congratulate Irene Gramza on winning the 2nd Vice State Regent Office. Our newsletter, prepared by Charlotte Williams, won 1st Place in the State Division II Competition.

We will not meet for a meeting this summer; we will meet in July for a social luncheon and bring some prospective members. Other members will be attending the monthly planning meetings for the Rosary Weekend in October.

Thank you, Gloria Tappin

Court Our Lady of the Lake, 2213—Lake Havasu City

We had our last meeting May 12. We do not meet in June, July or Aug.—next
meeting will be on Sept. 8.

Our Court sent Regent and Vice Regent to our State Convention our first time;
we both enjoy it; and got something out of it. We gave a short report to our
members who have E-Mail and will do a report for our Sept. Newsletter
for all the members. We were surprised to come home with a 2nd Place
Ribbon for our Division Newsletter so I was very excite about this.

At this time we are working on having a Fashion Show in March 2012.
The ladies are working out the details now.  We will still do the Coffee and
Donuts the First Sunday of the month during the summer months, and attend
the 3rd Sunday along with the Knights for Corporate Communion Sunday
at the 8:30 AM Mass. We have one member from the Knights and one from
the Catholic Daughters to bring up the gifts, then after Mass. Those who
wish go for breakfast during the winter at the Knights Hall for their pancake
breakfast and during the summer we go to the Golden Corral. We been
working with the Knights helping with their fish-fry dinners during
lent and their monthly Friendship Dinners, as they let us use there hall.

On Saturday June 11 our church will have the Pentecost Multicultural Mass were many cultures and languages will be represented. After the Mass in the hall, individuals make and share food of many different ethnic background. The Catholic Daughters will do an American Dish of Hot Dogs and Bake Beans. There is no cost to attend this open-to-all-in-our-parish you get to sample each dish if you like.

My first year as the Court Regent has been a very good one; I have good support of our membership and will be looking forward to a very exciting 2nd year with our BUNCO start in October and our Bake Sale and Craft in December. Enjoy your summer, God Bless.

Charlotte Van Nierop Regent, Court 2213 Our Lady of the Lake

Our Lady Of Fatima, 2136—Yuma

Our Court is had a Priest Appreciation Luncheon June 2. We invite all
local priests from Yuma, Somerton, San Luis, Wellton, Yuma Foothills
to this event. It is great to sit down and have lunch with these much
appreciated, loyal priests.

We had a successful quilt raffle that brought in close to $1000.
Our members sold raffle tickets at different events from January
through March. At our last meeting we gave our scholarship
winner a check for $500. She very much appreciated our
gift to continue her education.

We are not meeting this summer. Today will be our last official event.
But the members of our court are very involved with St. Francis of
Assisi Parish, so we continually work on various parish activities.

Our members are praying through the summer for the continuation of this court. Your prayers will be greatly appreciated.

ARIZONA C.D.A. REFLECTIONS
June 2011
When praying, let each prayer unfold like a blooming rose. Imagine your heart being that rose.  Let that prayer be an expression of love and adoration to God and Our Lady. Open your heart with prayer, just like the rose opens to with the brightness of the sun.
Br. Christopher B.P.P.
Our Arizona 26th Catholic Daughters of the Americas biennial convention is now part of our history. The weekend was a great success thanks to many people working hard to pull it all together. It was wonderful to see so many of my CDofA sisters and also more husbands then we have had in the past. It was so nice to have the men there giving us their support and help whenever it was needed.

‘First and foremost, I want to say a very special Thank You to the Regents of our host Courts, Carolyn Larson, St Germaine# 2473 Prescott Valley and Berlinda Gonzales, St. Mark #312 Winslow for a job well done. The members of the two courts worked so well on every task they had to handle and it paid off. So all of you give yourselves a big pat on the back! God bless you all.
More thanks then I can count goes to my State Board, Fr. Abran and Delma Araiza for all their work and many contributions to making our convention go so smoothly and successfully.

The Wyndham Garden staff was super as they met our every request and need not just that weekend but they have been superb to work with in all the details of planning our convention. Thank you Russ and Malena.

There are so many people to thank, Katie McLaughlin who took over at the 11th hour, Lynda Cleeton for also taking over at the last minute to play the music at our masses, Fr. Dan Vollmer for his gracious hospitality at St. Germaine’s church for our Memorial mass, Our JCDA and members of both host courts for serving as flag and banner bearers, the Knights of Columbus for giving of their time to present the colors at our opening ceremony, for the awesome members of my court that took care of the CDofA store and did such a great job with the silent auction, to Rosie Trienen for her great job with the State Raffle and for Deacon Carl Vessels for all the beautiful prayers through out the weekend and for his assistance at the masses. A big Thank you to all the convention chairmen who handled registration, credentials and the elections. I am sure I have forgotten someone but know that I appreciate all of you. God has truly blessed me with all of you in my life.

Congratulations to my State Board members, Maureen, Irene, Marilyn and JoAnn on your reelection and I look forward to our next 2 years serving the CDofA members in Arizona. And a special Thank you for the beautiful Madonna. She sits where I can see her daily and say a prayer to her for all of you.

Thank you Fr. Abran for all your guidance as State Chaplain and the many wonderful thoughts and words of wisdom you gave us at the convention.

Congratulations to the winners of the newsletter and scrapbook contest. I hope to see more entries in 2013. What beautiful work your courts are doing! And Thank You to the chairmen and their committees for your time and efforts in judging these entries.

It was an honor to present a 55-year pin to Felicia Ruiz from our Winslow court. Also present was Edwina Crosby, Sun City who has been in CDofA for 62 years. What an inspiration to all of us that there is no retirement age when you work for the Lord.

This year there were six women whose court submitted their name for the 2011 CDofA “Women of the Year”. All were so worthy of this recognition; I know the committee must have had a difficult time selecting the winner. It was with great pleasure that I presented the award to Joan Cosson from Court Our Lady of Lourdes # 2278. Congratulations Joan!

I pray that everyone enjoys a wonderful and fun summer. By now many of our members have scattered to various parts of the country to enjoy some cooler weather. I will look forward to all of you returning in the fall relaxed, refreshed and ready to begin another year of serving those less fortunate as we work in the name of our Lord.

God bless you and your families with good health and much happiness.

Communion on the Moon
July 20, 1969
(This is an article by Eric Metaxas)

Forty years ago two human beings changed history by walking
on the surface of the moon. But what happened before Buzz
Aldrin and Neil Armstrong exited the Lunar Module is perhaps
even more amazing, if only because so few people know about it.
"I'm talking about the fact that Buzz Aldrin took communion on the surface of the moon. Some months after his return, he wrote about it in Guideposts magazine.

And a few years ago I had the privilege of meeting him myself. I asked him about it and he confirmed the story to me, and I wrote about it in my book Everything You Always Wanted to Know About God (But Were Afraid to Ask).

The background to the story is that Aldrin was an elder at his Presbyterian Church in Texas during this period in his life, and knowing that he would soon be doing something unprecedented in human history, he felt he should mark the occasion somehow, and he asked his minister to help him And so the minister consecrated a communion wafer and a small vial of communion wine. And Buzz Aldrin took them with him out of the Earth's orbit and on to the surface of the moon.

He and Armstrong had only been on the lunar surface for a few minutes when Aldrin made the following public statement:  "This is the LM pilot. I'd like to take this opportunity to ask every person listening in, whoever and wherever they may be, to pause for a moment and contemplate the events of the past few hours and to give thanks in his or her own way." He then ended radio communication and there, on the silent surface of the moon, 250,000 miles from home, he read a verse from the Gospel of John, and he took communion. Here is his own account of what happened:

"In the radio blackout, I opened the little plastic packages which contained the bread and the wine. I poured the wine into the chalice our church had given me. In the one-sixth gravity of the moon, the wine slowly curled and gracefully came up the side of the cup.

Then I read the Scripture, 'I am the vine, you are the branches. Whosoever abides in me will bring forth much fruit. Apart from me you can do nothing."

I had intended to read my communion passage back to earth, but at the last minute [they] had requested that I not do this.  NASA was already embroiled in a legal battle with Madelyn Murray O'Hare, the celebrated opponent of religion, over the Apollo 8 crew reading from Genesis while orbiting the moon at Christmas. I agreed reluctantly.

I ate the tiny Host and swallowed the wine. I gave thanks for the intelligence and spirit that had brought two young pilots to the Sea of Tranquility . It was interesting for me to think: the very first liquid ever poured on the moon, and the very first food eaten there, were the communion elements.

And of course, it's interesting to think that some of the first words spoken on the moon were the words of Jesus Christ, who made the Earth and the moon - and Who, in the immortal words of Dante, is Himself the "Love that moves the Sun and other stars."

Two trucks loaded with a thousand copies of Roget's Thesaurus collided
as they left a New York publishing house last Thursday, according to
the Associated Press.
"Witnesses were stunned, startled, aghast, taken aback, stupefied... "

May Your Immaculate
Steps Open the Way of Purity and Peace!

O Mary, Immaculate Mother of Jesus, my tender Mother,
Queen of the Holy Rosary, you who lowered yourself and
chose the sad Pompeii Valley for residence, in order to
illuminate the world with light, your graces and your
mercies, lower your eyes filled with compassion on me
and accept me as your servant and your child who
loves you and calls you “Mother of Mercy”!

Listen to my complaints: may your immaculate steps open the way of purity and peace for me. How sweet is the softness of your voice in my ears, my sweet Lady, because your words are those of life. Open your hands full of graces and help your unworthy servant who calls you and deliver me from the traps of his enemies.

Hand me the soft chains of your crown with which you attract the most rebellious of hearts and make my heart your prisoner so that it never moves away from you again. O Pure Rose, may your fragrance carry me to the love of Paradise. Amen.
