Winter 2010 Newsletter
Susan Mon'e, State Regent and Editor
By the time you are reading this newsletter, the highlight
of 2010 for the Arizona Catholic Daughters of the Americas
will be history. And the Pottenger family will be getting
ready to spend their first Christmas in their new home which
we built. I want to take this time to say a Very Special Thank
You to every one of you for your part in making this dream
come true. No matter what part you played, it made this happen.
Maybe you donated money, sold raffle calendars, made trips to
Marana to physically work on the house or helped prepare food for the dedication Thanksgiving dinner, we couldn’t have done it without you. It was the ultimate “Team Work”

Special congratulations to Arizona’s oldest court, St Mark # 312 in Winslow.  In October they celebrated the 75th anniversary of the court. Keep up the great work for the good of the order.

Now it is that time of the year once again when we all become so busy and involved with the hectic days leading to the holidays and the end of 2010. All the tasks that occupy our time and our minds sometimes keep us from using the time to prepare our heart and soul, taking time to remember “The Reason for the Season!”?

We’re busy with all the preparations for Christmas with the Christmas cards, Christmas shopping, decorating our homes, baking, cleaning, gift wrapping and shipping. Maybe making travel plans to visit family and friends for the holidays.

Advent is our time for spiritual preparations for the celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. It is a special time for us to remember to take time for ourselves and meditate on the real meaning and importance of Christmas.” Our life is God’s gift to us but what we do with it is our gift to God”.  When we put our priorities in order everything else seems to fall right into place.

As our Christmas traditions are enjoyed again this year and we enjoy
warm memories of Christmas past and build new memories of Christmas
2010, I wish all of you a very meaningful Advent and then a Blessed
and Merry Christmas. And may the Lord bless you and your family
with health and happiness in 2011. May the spirit
of the season continue all year long.

From the Desk of Susan Mone
My Dear Catholic Daughters,

It was great to see so many Catholic Daughters attend the
workshops, first in Tempe and the next in Marana. The time we spent together learning about our Order and the Church was Grace filled. At the workshops, I shared of the importance of coming together as Catholic Daughters not only in the Charity and Unity that the order asks for in the community, also to come together in all aspects of life especially for each other on the local court and state level.

In order to achieve this unity in the courts we must first “leave our gifts at the altar and reconcile with our brothers and sisters.” Then we are able to present our gifts to the Lord at His altar. In my experience, as a Pastor for the last 9 years I have found that the demise of many groups in the Church has been due to envy, gossip, and back stabbing. I called for an end to all of this that is happening in the courts. In order to end this evil from entering the courts, I ask the local Regents to organize retreats and/or days of recollection for your courts to heal any of the evil that maybe trying to work itself into the courts. Ask your local Chaplain to help you plan the retreat and/or day of recollection. I am also available to assist you. I would like to hear that every court has a retreat/day of recollection planned for the Easter season 2011.

Through the healing and the forgiving process we are able to advance in the Grace of God to achieve greater good for our Lord through the work of the Catholic Daughters. As we learned from the National conference in Buffalo, New York it is “for in Him we live and move and have our being.” Acts 17:28

I send you my blessings and my warmest affections in this time of preparation for Advent in which we will walk through patiently and perseveringly in await of the glorious return of Our Lord.

God Bless you!

From your National Director, Delma Araiza
       My Dear CDA Sisters,

As we joyfully await the Birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, we are busy preparing our favorite family traditional foods.  Our kitchens are engulfed with the aroma of those goodies we share during this time of the year.  Yummie, I can hardly wait. We also ponder on just what gifts we will share with family and friends.

Let us not forget however, the challenges and opportunities which are before us as Catholic Daughters as we start the New Year.  Are you willing to accept the challenges so we might live our motto of Unity and Charity? Will we all say yes and pray to allow God’s will to be done.  This is the question, my dear sisters, as we prepare for the Holiest of Seasons.  May our will be the will of our Lord Jesus Christ, as we await the birth of Christ.

I would also want to express  my sincere appreciation to the attendees of our National Convention in Buffalo, for supporting my nomination and election to the National Board as National Director.  I will work with our National Board  to achieve the goals of our Order.

I would be remiss, if I did not thank the members of the National Board, and all the members of our State Courts for attending the dedication of our Arizona Habitat Home.  It was just wonderful to see you all at the dedication and the Thanksgiving Dinner.  Kudos to all who participated in the build.

In closing I want to express my sincere thanks to All the Courts and all members who offered masses and prayed for the success of my recent surgery.  I will be eternally grateful to you all.

My very best wishes to you and yours for the Christmas Season, and I wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year, and may God Bless You Always.

Yours in Christ,

Delma Araiza

Court Our Lady of Lourdes, #2278, Sun City West

Resolution Adopted July 14-18, 2010
at the 53rd Biennial Catholic Convention in Buffalo

WHEREAS, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas have adopted the practice of praying three Hail Mary's daily for an end to terrorism in the world and to remember those who are protecting us by their service to our country; and

WHEREAS, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas strive to bring Christ's light to others; and

WHEREAS, the numerous organizations across our country hold activities, take collections of articles and offer support for the men and women of the Armed Forces, to let them know we appreciate the sacrifices they make to keep us safe and to keep freedom alive; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the members of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas organize or partner an activity in support of our Armed Forces.   Submitted by: National Resolutions Committee

Operation Morningstar is a CDA issues-orientated program to encourage Catholic  women to speak out on legislation while it is being considered. Morality in Media is an organization dedicated to banishing pornography. Wear your white ribbon proudly October 31 through Nov. 7 this year and encourage everyone to contact their senators and representatives on these issues (see also page 12, “National CDA Encourages Members to contact their legislators as constituents”. The website www.moralityinmedia.org has a wealth of information on how to do this also.

Collecting Stamps: Rose Marie Schaefer coordinates this activity in our court and Beth, a member of St. Clare’s Women’s Guild mails the stamps. They are sent to St. Pathrik Missionary Fathers in Kiltegan, County Wicklow Ireland. The used stamps are sold to dealers who then sell them to stamp collectors. The stamps are weighed and the money is given to the priest and the funds are used to support a mission in Rumbek which is in Southern Sudan in Africa.

Court Our Lady of Guadalupe, 2250, Phoenix

During October, members of Court Our Lady of Guadalupe, 2250 were again working hard for the success of Rosary Sunday 2009. During the month of November we have been having crochet sales—our last one this year will be December 3. We sell the work created by the inmates and give the money to the André House in Phoenix. Last year, we were able to donate $1,655.50 to Fr. Eric for the homeless. Speaking of Fr. Eric, he was able to attend the canonization of St. Br. André Bessette. Members will be looking forward to our Christmas Brunch—the Missionary Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe will be present.

We congratulate our own Irene Gramza for accepting the 2nd Vice State Regent position. A sad note—because we will miss her—Mary Walsh, 102, a praying member went to her heavenly home on Thursday, October 21.

Congratulations to the Pottenger family on receiving the new Habatit home in Marana and we thank Ct. Blessed Mother Theresa, #2632 and the men who served a beautiful dinner after the dedication ceremony.

Ct. Padre Kino, #1932, Tempe

With the installation of our new officers by Susan Mone in September, activity for Court Padre Kino #1932 has been non stop. Ramona Kiesecker, our new Regent,  is going to keep us on our toes with her great leadership.  October was very busy with Rosary Sunday, CDA birthday luncheon, distributing 800 white ribbons on WRAP Sunday with JoAnn Kersbergen our Secretary overseeing this, participating in the Ministry Fair at Mt. Carmel, the CDA workshop at Resurrection and the Casino fundraiser trip organized by our new Treasurer, Rorie Levario.

We installed 3 new members in November, participated in the Ministry Fair at Resurrection, planned our Christmas project headed by Marie Castle and one of our new members Lisa Townsend, attended the Memorial Mass for deceased sisters and planned the Holiday Potluck December meeting where we collect Christmas gifts for Desert Vista Hospital to be delivered by Elisabeth Wilcox, our new Vice Regent. The crowning glory for the state was the dedication of the Habitat House in Marana where several of our members had participated in the build. I hear it was a sea of purple shirts with over 100 people in attendance. What an honor for Catholic Daughters.

Melanie Collinsworth

Our Lady of the Lake Court 2213—Lake Havasu City

Our First Bunco was held on Oct 11. At the Buncos, we serve salad lunch with some hot dishes. This is our main money maker.

On Sat. Oct 30, we served dinner for 50, 4th degree Knights, their wives and guests. They were installing new Officers. We are working with the Knights. On the 3rd Sunday at the 8:30 AM Mass; we have one member from the Catholic Daughters and one from the Knights bring up the gifts. We wear our purple shirts and they wear their shirts. Then we go out for breakfast. We also have members who belong to the Rosary-Maker group and they spend hours in making the rosaries to be sent to the missions. Our goal for this year is to get 5 new members; so far we have 2 who have signed up to be Catholic Daughters.

From our Court to all: We wish you a very Thankful and Blessed Thanksgiving.

First Annual Our Lady of Guadalupe Cookiefest

On Sunday, December 12th, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the St. Gianna Beretta Molle Court No. 2634 will hold the First Annual Our Lady of Guadalupe Cookiefest.  This will be a joint effort with the Knights of Columbus.  The proceeds of the Cookiefest will be split between the two. The Knights and CDA have been selling 50/50 raffle tickets since the beginning of October.  The proceeds from the raffle will be used towards improvements to the parish hall—such as much needed air conditioning.  The hours of the Cookiefest on December 12th will be from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Holding their first fund raiser, a bake sale after each Mass, a check in the amount of $620.25 has been mailed to Archbishop Timothy Broglio.  The St. Gianna Beretta Court will continue to faithfully work towards assisting the Archdiocese of the Military in their service to all our military men, women and families.  For more information on the Archdiocese of the Military, go to www.milarch.org.

Court St. Mark #312 of Winslow, AZ

During the month of October, members hosted a
reception to celebrate Madre de Dios church’s
60th anniversary!  Among those in attendance
were CDA members, Father Chacon, Bishop Wall,
and many more!

On National CDA Sunday, we celebrated our court’s
75th anniversary, making us the oldest court in Arizona!  Honored at the luncheon that followed were Felicia Ruiz, 55 years of service, and Flora Rodriguez, 39 years of service.  Their dedication to CDA is truly a blessing!

Vice Regent, Cathy Eckstrand and I had the opportunity to attend the Fall Workshop in Marana.   Officers and members from across Arizona were in attendance, including one of the newest courts, Marana, and the oldest court, Winslow!

The Archdiocese for the Military Services was created by Pope John Paul II to provide the Catholic Church's full range of pastoral ministries and spiritual services to those in the United States Armed Forces. This includes more than 220 installations in 29 countries, patients in 153 V.A. Medical Centers, and federal employees serving outside the boundaries of the USA in 134 countries. Numerically, the AMS is responsible for more than 1.5 million men, women, and children.  The Archdiocese receives no funding from the United States government. Rather, the Archdiocese is solely funded by the generosity of its chaplains, men and women in uniform and private benefactors.  With the Co-Sponsorship Program, military men who have a vocation to the priesthood will be co-sponsored through their five years of the seminary training with a U.S. diocese or religious order. The Archdiocese agrees to fund 50% of the annual cost of $25,000 for each year in the seminary. The number of Co-sponsored seminarians in the last two years has increased from 7 to 30.  These men upon ordination will serve three years in their diocese before serving as a military chaplain.
NATIONAL CDA
Join us on the Weekend of January 21 through 23 for Roe Vs Wade prayers.

January 22, 2010 is the 37th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. Since that time it is estimated that over 50 million babies have been victims of abortion. The National Catholic Daughters of the Americas have designated January as the month for prayers to stop abortion. A RESOLUTION WAS PASSED BY BOTH NATIONAL CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THE AMEREICAS AND ARIZONA STATE CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS that reads:

"that ...Courts who cannot join the National Walk of Life in Washington D.C.,
should promote or participate in a day of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in
their local parishes to atone for the sins of abortion on the date of the
Roe vs. Wade decision, January 22."
This resolution passed unanimously.

Let's do it! Let’s have a day or weekend of reparation and atonement for the Sins of Abortion. It is time to sponsor a Holy Hour at your parish or to encourage participation at other parishes for healing those affected by abortions and for conversion of those who promote abortion.

We would be happy to list all the participating parishes on the following website: http://dayofadoration.com/index.html

National CDA encourages Members to contact their legislators as constituents. While the Catholic Daughters of the Americas does not support political activities, you may share our common beliefs with your legislators.

You may identify and contact your US Senator through the US Senate's website . Please, link to the http://www.senate.gov and contact your Senator. You may identify and contact your US Representative through this site https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.html
